thoughts on homeschooling

I've been doing a lot of soul-searching lately on my decision to homeschool Kea next year, I guess just checking in as we get closer and closer to the day that Kea is supposed to go off to school. I know in my heart that it is what I want to do, and have wanted to do with my kids since I was a child, and I guess now I'm just backing up my desires with 'arguments' for all those discussions I keep having with various people in our lives!

Today I came across this article which really hit home with me, so I thought I'd post it for anyone who wants to read it! I'd like to expand more about our thoughts around homeschooling, and probably will in posts to come.

musings on moonbeams at bedtime!

How frustrating is that - I just wrote out a big long entry and then lost it after I pressed publish. That's the second time this has happened - one would think I'd learn to copy my writing before pressing publish!!!

There are many things I love about our house, one of which is the fact that we often have a gorgeous view of the moon from our bathroom window. Many a time I have looked up while brushing my teeth and noticed a gorgeous almost full moon staring back down at me. I love the moon - watching it's never ending cycle, gasping at the beauty of it when it is full, hearing Kea's surprise at seeing it during the day. It is such a big part of our lives.

When Jamie and I decided to start trying for our second baby, I researched which herbs were great at enhancing fertility and making my body the healthiest possible for creating babies. I spent a couple of months steeping these herbs in a glass jar overnight on our window sill, bathed in moonlight. The night that we conceived Tiegan it was a gorgeous full moon in December. I went into labour as the full moon was waning, and noticed between contractions that I had a perfect view of the moon through our dining room windows as I sat in the blow-up pool. I've always thought that it was really neat that we have a little moon-baby, one that came out looking like a little faerie changling!

That is, neat until we realized a little pattern....every full moon, Tiegan is up ALL NIGHT LONG. Sure, she might allow us a snippet of sleep here and there, so that all together we might claim 2 hours of sleep, but that is primarily while the other is up with Tiegan. She is restless, hyper, playful and sometimes grumpy all night. Some months it is for one night right on the full moon, sometimes it is for a couple of nights around the full moon, and this past full moon we thought we'd lucked out, but it was two nights after the full moon. I'm beginning to realize that I kind of dread the full moon these days! I can't wait until she's old enough that we can just give her a book and tell her to amuse herself while we all sleep:-)

Luckily tonight is definitely not a full moon, so I'm off to bed now to join my peacefully sleeping family! We've inherited a second queen size bed, so now our bedroom very literally is one big "bed"room! So much fun - and so much more comfortable! Sweet dreams everyone!
